Re: Duda redo?

If this is so mathematically established, I wish folks would cite the studies that support their positions.

Re: Travis Shaw

I don't get this at all from the Brewers perspective. Why sign somebody likely worse than Shaw at free agent $$ when you have Shaw at cost control. And then deal him for two question marks coming off DL-laden seasons? What's the deal? Isn't Shaw the sort of guy they should be building around? Spendi...

Re: So now what? (Remaining relievers)

Right now, the leaders are: ⋅ Jerry Blevins* ⋅ Chasen Bradford ⋅ Jeurys Familia ⋅ Rafael Montero ⋅ A.J. Ramos ⋅ Hansel Robles ⋅ Josh Smoker* ⋅ Anthony Swarzak Bradford and Smokey's slots are the two most fungible. That l...

Re: So now what? (Remaining relievers)

Smith's the one who reached AA. He could come quick, probably in 2018, but probably not out of camp.

I just double-checked. He DID pitch one inning in AAA while with the Tampa Bay system (the second of three organizations he was part of last year). So he's got that going for him.

Re: So now what? (Remaining relievers)

A good chance one might, probably one of the two who debuted last year. Rhame or Callahan. Only one of the remaining flock played as high as AA last season.

Re: Talking 'Bout Andrew McCutchen ... Again

MLB.com has Crick has Reynolds as their #4 and Crick as their #16. The Mets equivalent would be something like Thomas Szapucki and Anthony Kay. As Mets #4 Szapucki is currently recovering from TJ surgery, I'm tempted to reach up to #3 or down to #5 for an analog, but #3 for the Mets is Andres Gimene...

Nuanced Poll: Adrian Gonzalez

Adrian Gonzalez has been signed for a single season, apparently at or near the big league minimum. Re: 2017 Tabloid Cover Derby Round 4.0.1 (SEMIFINAL)

BLUNDER is terrific. ⋅ They turn his nickname on it's ear, just as is called for by the story. Turning WONDER into BLUNDER may feel cheap and obvious elsewhere, but there's nothing cheap about it here, not on this day. He earned it. ⋅ They work the backup head NATIONAL DISASTER i...

Re: Guess Who died in 2018

I've made a lot of comments about the alarming mortality of the frontpersons for bands associated with the 90s, but as far as I know she wasn't reputed to have chemical issues, unlike so many of her contemporaries. I know she did profess at one point to be bipolar. I thought they were great, althoug...

Re: Noah's Arb (and other arb cases)

I tend to think most lefty specialists go a little high in the walk rate. When you come on to face a middle-of-the-order hitter with a tying or winning run on base, it's often better that he gets away from you via a walk than a hit. It's certainly less than ideal, as it makes the crisis thicker, but...

Re: First Base and the Opening Day Roster

Yeah, Gonzalez would definitely give Alonso time to catch up. Alonso seemed to have 80% of his value wrapped up in his power, with Smith giving you more fallback skills — contact hitting, strike zone control, and fielding. But Alonso's breakthrough year seems to suggest he can be a more well-rounded...

Re: >>>Opening Day IGT 3/29/18<<<

This shouldn't be that big a deal. Gonzalez falls on his face and after a month he's gone. Or maybe he becomes a pinch-hitter and if he continues to hack, is gone after a second month. I'm still treating it like a grave choice. Maybe the plan all along is to treat him as a backup. I don't know, but ...

Re: First Base and the Opening Day Roster

Interesting that five out of 11 votes so far suggest that the 2018 season will begin, like Rocky Balboa, with no sign of Adrian.

Also the most recent (that is, most recently active ) ump in the Hall of Fame. The only guy enshrined since Harvey was Hank O'Day, who worked from 1895-1927. First Base and the Opening Day Roster

As the Mets add Adrian Gonzalez to the roster, they perhaps create more questions than they answer. Carrying two firstbasemen (and only firstbasemen) on the roster at once is not unheard of in 2018, but it's certainly a departure. In the National League, anyhow. So how are they going to go forward? ...
