A MOSTLY HUMORLESS SET OF RULES FOR THE 2013-14 CPF SINGLE ELIMINATION SONG PARODY CONTEST

SONG PARODIES

1. Create a song parody of an actual song. Your song parody should be based on a Met topic, most likely a Met related theme, thing or person (“Met topic”) that will be provided.

MET TOPICS

2. Several Met topics will be provided in each round from which to base your song parody on. (But See, Rule #4: Met Topics in the Championship Round, below). Rather than provide each player with his or her own personal set of Met topics, this year, each player will choose his or her Met topic from a common pool of Met topics. Every Met topic provided will be available to every player (thus, “common pool”). Therefore, it is possible, and likely, that in some of the head to head match-ups, the competing players will have chosen the same Met topic. This system promotes fairness, and avoids any "I wanted to be Mr. Black; Mr. Brown sounds like shit" issues.

3. A new set of Met topics will be provided for each round. The Met topics provided in the previous round will no longer be in play and cannot be used.

MET TOPICS IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND (a/k/a THE FINALS)

4. For the championship round, one Met topic will be provided, thus requiring the two finalists to create a parody from the same theme.

SUBMITTING YOUR PARODY

5. Players will be given a generous amount of time to submit their song parodies (from one to two weeks for each song parody).

6. Song parodies will be deemed submitted when they are received by me in my CPF Private Mailbox. Players should not post their completed parodies on the main forum.

POSTING PARODIES

6a. Song parodies will be posted to the main forum by the contest administrator (that's me). In every round, each head to head matchup will have its own thread, which will be in poll format, and comprised of two anonymous head to head contestants. Contestants' identities will be disclosed at the end of each round.

7. Players may, at their option, also include a) a Youtube or other video of the actual song being parodied, either at the top or bottom of the post; b) the title of the song being parodied, either at the top or bottom of the post; c) lyrics to the song being parodied, either at the top or bottom of the post and/or d) notes, references etc.

MISSING THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR SONG PARODY

8. Don’t.

9. But if you must, fair and humanitarian efforts will be made to accommodate contestants who cannot meet their deadlines, so long as the flow of the tournament isn’t unreasonably compromised. Contestants who cannot submit their parodies prior to the deadline for submission risk forfeiting their pending match-up and thus, tournament elimination by disqualification. Contestants who anticipate missing the deadline for submission are encouraged to contact the tournament administrator (that's me) as soon as possible to determine if reasonable arrangements can be made to to enlarge the time to submit.

THE CRANE POOL KRANEPOOL CUP

10. This year’s contestants will be playing for the Crane Pool Kranepool Cup ("CPKC") , named so in honor of the forum namesake.

Image

11. Ron Swoboda’s face will be etched off of the cup shown above, and replaced with an image of the winner’s face. The other side of the cup will list every past winner of the Song Parody contest, in the style of The Stanley Cup.

12. The CPKC will remain in my sole and exclusive possession The CPKC will not go on public tour.
Image

12. No one may visit me to view The CPKC.

SEEDINGS

13. All 16 contestants were randomly seeded from 1-16, and then slotted accordingly in a standard 16 seed single elimination bracket. Random seeds were generated by writing each contestant's name on a small piece of paper - one contestant per piece of paper - placing all 16 pieces of paper into the Crane Pool Kranepool Cup with Swoboda's face still etched on the cup, and then drawing out each piece of paper, one at a time. The contestant's name that appeared on the first piece of paper drawn from the CPKP received the #1 seed, the second name received the #2 seed, etc. All 16 pieces of paper were of identical size and weight. The seeding process was supervised and audited by my mother.

Contestants were randomly seeded in the following order:

1. Zvon
2. metsmarathon
3. metirish
4. A Boy Named Seo
5. Lefty Specialist
6. G-Fafif
7. Kong76

THE BRACKET

14. The Bracket:

FIFO (First in - First Out) SEEDING FOR SUBSEQUENT ROUNDS

14a. Head to head matchups for the first round of the tournament are determined by the aforementioned random seeding process (see The Bracket). For subsequent rounds, contestants will be matched up against each other in the order in which they submit their song parodies to my private mailbox. Thus, the author of the first parody submitted will be matched up against the author of the second parody submitted, etc. With this method, contestants will not know the identity of their opponents until the end of each round.

FIRST ROUND MET TOPICS

15. First Round Met topics are:

Ralph would be greatly honored to accept this tribute if he were still with us, and he'd probably say something like: "To all you Valentines out there, Happy Father's Day". Ralph was selected to Baseball's Hall of Fame for his considerable accomplishments as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, yet he is as vital to the history of the Mets organization as he was to the Pittsburgh franchise. In light of the foregoing, there can only be one Mets topic for the remaining finalists:

27. FINALS TOPIC

Ralph Kiner.

FINAL ROUND DEADLINE

AMENDMENTS TO THE RULES (WITH EVEN MORE LESS HUMOR)

The following changes have been made to the tournament rules:

a) All contestants should submit their songs on or before 1/13/14, 11:59PM. The contestants in the first group (Former Rule 16) are given an additional three days to submit their songs. Contestants in the second group (Former Rule 17) are unaffected by this change.

b) Rule 18 is re-written to reflect that voting for each first-round head to head contest should close in precisely 48 hours. This is based on my discovery that the forum software allows members to set an automatic computer generated and enforced deadline for the closing of polls that they create.

AMENDMENTS

16. All contestants must submit their completed first round song parodies no later than January 13, 2014, 11:59PM.

17. Repealed

18. Each head to head matchup will receive its own unique thread. Voting in each first round head to head contest will end 48 hours after it is posted to the forum.

It would be kinda cool to post the matchups anonymously. Don't even say which of the contests we're voting on, maybe.

If by anonymous, you mean that I post each matchup thread without identifying the contestants, this is a terrific idea. Let's put it to the membership. I'd bet that MFS62 woulda played under this format.

This means that the winners can't be identified until the voting period ends for all of the same round matchups. Otherwise, you know, by process of elimination, you'd figure out the identities of contestants to the last matchup(s). Also, if the matchups are posted in a staggered format instead of all at once, the earliest winners and losers would be expected to keep their identities secret. Also, the doors to the Looser's Lounge won't open until the entire round is over. But these are minor concessions, and shouldn't be obstacles to implementing this idea.

I like JCL's idea also. So then, I guess, the first two who would submit would be up against each other, making the brackets above unnecessary.

If you mean that the first two contestants that submit their parodies to me are then matched up against each other unidentified, and then the next two contestants that submit their parodies are matched up against each other unidentified, etc., etc., well this is a radical departure, and not expressed in JCL's post. (At least, I don't think). But we can do this, too. Let's put this suggestion up for discussion, too, and see what the field says about "the sharpie rules".

I totally support the jcl rule with the sharpie variation.

That way there's total anonymity where even the contestants don't know their opponent.
the first step is admitting you're a runner.

running is a mental sport, and we're all insane.

To clarify things in case anyone's confused - including myself - the following proposed rule changes are being considered for adoption:

Under JCL's proposal, the bracket stays as is. Contestants will be identified only after voting is completed for the entire round. The format is repeated for each succeeding round.

sharpie's proposal does away with conventional tournament seeding and thus, "The Bracket". Instead, contestants are matched up against each other in the order in which they submit their parodies to my private mailbox. Thus, the first parody submitted will go head to head against the second parody submitted, the third parody against the fourth parody, etc. This seeding format will apply to each round.

As things stand, JCL's proposal appears to be on pace to be adopted, although it hasn't been officially adopted yet; sharpie's isn't even close.
